CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
Career choice is a critical decision that significantly shapes an individual's life trajectory, influencing their personal fulfillment, financial stability, and social contribution. While various factors influence career decisions, parents play a pivotal role in guiding and shaping their children's career aspirations. In the context of Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Nigeria, understanding the socio-cultural determinants of parental influence on their children's career choices is essential due to the unique cultural and socio-economic dynamics prevalent in the region.
In Nigeria, as in many other societies, parental influence on career choice is deeply rooted in socio-cultural norms, family expectations, and economic realities. According to Ogunbekun and Ogunbekun (2015), Nigeria's cultural values emphasize respect for parental authority and the importance of family cohesion. Parents often wield significant influence over their children's decisions, including those related to education and career paths. This influence is particularly pronounced in communities like Abakaliki, where traditional family structures and communal values remain strong.

1.7 Scope of the study
This study focuses to identify Socio-Cultural Factors Influencing Parental Impact on Children’s Career Choices, assess the Impact of Parental Influence on the Career Development of Children, and examine the Relationship Between Socio-Cultural Determinants and Career Satisfaction among children. Hence parents and primary 5 children in selected primary schools in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State shall serve as enrolled participants for this study.
1.8 Limitation of the study
Like in every human endeavour, the researchers encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. The significant constraint are:
Time: The researcher encountered time constraint as the researcher had to carry out this research along side other academic activities such as attending lectures and other educational activities required of her.
Finance: The researcher incurred more financial expenses in carrying out this study such as typesetting, printing, sourcing for relevant materials, literature, or information and in the data collection process.
Availability of Materials: The researcher encountered challenges in sourcing for literature in this study. The scarcity of literature on the subject due to the nature of the discourse was a limitation to this study.
